In most states, becoming a notary public involves meeting a number of requirements. Generally, you must be 18 years of age, not have a serious criminal history, and successfully complete an application process. In some states, the notary application process will require notary education (ranging from a simple online course to a notary class and competency exam) and a background check, as well as the purchase of a surety bond. A more thorough explanation for your state is described below.

Become a Nevada notary public with Notary Rotary, Inc.

Qualifications:

To become a Nevada notary public you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted permanent resident
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a resident of the state or a resident of a bordering state of California, Oregon, Utah, Idaho or Arizona and employed in Nevada
  • You must possess your civil rights (a felon cannot be a notary until they have their rights restored)

Step 1: Enroll in and complete the mandatory training for notary public appointment

The following persons will be required to complete a four hour notary public education class conducted by the Nevada Secretary of State's Notary Division:

  • Anyone applying to be a notary public for the first time
  • Anyone renewing their appointment as a notary public, if their appointment as a notary public has expired for a period greater than 365 days, or
  • A renewing notary who has had a violation in the past four years

Your bond will usually be shipped the same day it is ordered and arrive within 2-3 days.

When you receive your $10,000 surety bond from Notary Rotary, Inc., take it to the office of the county clerk of court in the county in which you reside, or the county in which you are employed if you are an out of state applicant. The clerk will administer the oath, file your bond, and provide you with a "Filing Notice." There is a fee for the filing of the bond and this fee varies between counties. Make sure to call ahead and learn the cost of that fee for your county.
