Two kinds of backups

Sorry to hear about your crash.

Yoli/CA, your right that you have to have the right kind of backup to recover from different problems.

The worst problem is what you experienced, where the whole computer has to be replaced. You need installation media or files for all the software you bought (like Microsoft Word) and a backup of all your data. I've found Microsoft OneDrive convenient for this, but it isn't perfect.

A less serious problem is if your hard disk fails, and you can install an identical replacement. An equivalent problem is a malware infection that you can't get rid of. If you've been making regular image backups, you can restore the most recent good image, and everything comes back: your data, your programs, your operating system. It's like a time machine that transports your computer to a point before the problem.

But the image backup only works on the computer it was made from. Sort of like replacing a broken piece of luggage: if you get exactly the same make and model, you can put everything exactly where it was. But if you get a different model, everything has to be rearranged.
