The scam seems to rely on the fact that the person receiving the call won't know where the call is coming from. You can spoof a number, but as far as I know, spoofing does not include call-forwarding - if you call THAT number back you will get whoever it actually belongs to - NOT forwarded to an offshore number.
So the problem becomes, "How do I know where this call came from?" You can Google the phone number, but that often just leads to sites that want you to pay them for the information and wasted time. Here's a potential alternative that will help you with this particular scam:

This site lists all area codes in the US and Canada, either by state/province or by area code number. A quick scan in numerical order will tell you where the call came from. If the area code is not on the list, don't even think about calling it back. |
