Sadly, way too many of us have our own stories with many similar types of experiences with that organization. Since I believe it would be in all of our best interests if they really did do what they claim to, and since hope springs eternal, I keep looking for signs that they've changed. Instead, I keep seeing more and more examples reinforcing what many of us here have long believed about them. So welcome to the club... Reminders, however, are always useful - so thanks for sharing your story here.
I'm another one who will most likely never become a paying member again. I do get their certification and BGC, only keep certain doors from closing. (And their Certification exam is a joke. Enough comments have been made here on that subject in the past, so I'll leave it at that.)
As for 'Continuing Ed', I agree with VT_Syrup. Aside from the School of Hard Knocks, this forum has been where I've learned the most about being a "signing agent". Over the years, many (but not all) of the most knowledgeable notaries have moved on or don't have time to post much, so you need to use some discernment and common sense about what you believe. And it's always important to search for answers via the Search button AND Google - which often brings up threads from here - before posting questions.
We all appreciate when people post on issues that have either not been thrashed around yet, or haven't been for a long while, so becoming a regular reader can be a great way to learn and grow in this field.
