Where did you get the idea that that's legal here? As far as I know, our state still requires physical presence between the notary and the signer as a condition to notarizing a signature. The only potential exception I can think of would be for a Subscribing Witness situation, which is likely a very rare occurrence for the the vast majority of us.

If you don't agree, please document where/how this has become allowable in California.
