There are probably a number of companies (especially the national settlement companies) who aren't accepting new applications from notaries right now, as they have plenty already in their databases.
I went through that recently with one of the biggies I'd chosen not to work for in the past because of low fees. However, I did an in-bank signing recently for a LO who's able to choose her own notary. (The one she's used in the past moved too far away to cover her signings anymore.) She was pleased with how I handled it, so asked me to cover future signings for her, through this settlement company.
Since I'd be able to set my own fee, I was happy to apply, but I couldn't find any link or info on their website for how to do so. I had to send an email to explain the situation before I received the very extensive paperwork (which reminded me of why I'd chosen not to work for them in the relatively recent past... )
