I doubt they'd ever admit as much, but this story reinforces my gut feelings against RON.
There will always be people who commit fraud in spite of safeguards like thumbprints and videotape recordings as well as notaries who are either careless or complicit with following the rules. But it seems to me that the electronic version just opens the door to more opportunities. My biggest fear is the safety of whatever services are used to store those recordings.
Maybe someone who's done some RON signings can answer another question I've had... Is it possible for a RON notary to complete a notarization and 'forget' or somehow neglect to make a video recording of a transaction to begin with? |
