I think what's going to happen is that the Covid vaccine will become like the flu vaccine - you need one every year, because it mutates.
Covid vaccine efficacy is in the 90% range, while the flu vaccine is somewhere around 40% because it's basically an educated guess each year about what strain will be dominant. What people aren't getting is that the vaccines will not prevent the disease, but they will mitigate its effects if you do become infected. Over 90% of the people currently hospitalized with covid are unvaccinated; the vaccinated might get sick, but not sick enough to be hospitalized. If enough people get vaccinated, eventually the disease pretty much goes away - for example, polio, smallpox, measles, rubella, etc. Flu is different because it mutates every year; covid may very well become like that.
