Great feeder tip, Bear, thanks for the link! I will be putting it on my X-mas shopping list for my husband this year. He’ll love it, excellent anti-ant feature. Appreciate it.
For hummer plants in Florida, I would imagine that cannas would do very well. We have some that bloom early summer through fall, and they attract hummers like crazy.
Bird perches are great. We have a clothesline (a dark backpacking cord, so it’s barely visible) close to the hummer feeders and they love hanging-out on it, resting, looking around, goose guarding, etc. often several at a time. I have a great picture of a hummer sitting on the line, and because the line blends into the background so much it looks like he’s sitting in mid air.
There’s an osprey nest on the edge of our yard which can be viewed closely using the telescope (we’re also into star-gazing), and what a treat it is to see them migrate up from Mexico.
They return each year in February like clockwork to the same nest site, grabbing large limbs and hauling them across the sky to do necessary repairs and maintenance before finally settling in again. From doing courtship dances around the rim of the nest, to giving flying lessons to the not-so-small hatchlings, it’s a delight to be in their midst. |
