Funny! Mold is fungi. Fungi from decomposing carbon material (straw) and beneficial bacteria is what makes your garden grow. These two are the basics along with many other organisms that make a soil alive and able to grow plants.

I add micorrrhizal fungi to the roots of all my seedlings as I plant them. Buy it on Amazon.

Back to Eden gardening is a method based on fungi dominant soil using decaying wood chips. The decomposing process is long however.

When I clear out a garden bed I cut the top of the plant and leave the root stock to decay. Beneficial fungi is concentrated there under the roots. Breaking up the soil destroys a lot of good micro-organisms. Adding compost on top followed with new planting is called 'no til gardening'. Its another method being adopted by many including me.

I had raised onions in this bed so it was a good one to dig up and experiment with.
