The only ones that have been legit are when they deal with an expired credit card. And I always find another way to access the account to check. As others have said, I think PayPal is a common target for this type of phishing scam. I'm not a fan of Pay either, for the reasons well stated above, but have a couple of GNW clients that prefer to use it - especially when they're located elsewhere. I have my account linked to a checking account that doesn't get used much and one I don't keep much money in. As soon as money is received by PayPal, I transfer it out to that checking account - and I can easily transfer funds online between checking accounts as I wish.
I haven't ever responded to those types of emails and it's never affected the status of my accounts. (And yes, I've received those types of "confirmation of account" phishing emails for other types of accounts, as well.) I do think it's a good idea, if you have time, to report those emails (or forward them) to the real owner of the sites spammed. |
