I do tell her that I regret not being able to accept her order, but chasing payment for professional services successfully provided is a gig no one enjoys . . .
Peggy, sorry for your experience. My technique, before accepting any signings, I access NR and analyze the ratings/comments. This simple (and valuable) step has saved the proverbial 'bacon' repeatedly and I treasure this element (and other elements) of NR. When potential clients call, if I don't have immediate access to NR, I ask them about their rating on NR and advise that if there is 'cause for pause' regarding their rating on NR I will be returning the signing engagement.
