License vs. Commission . . . What is the Difference You Ask
Posted by  PegiT_MN of MN on 8/1/15 8:18am Msg #535670
Most notaries are commissioned but some states require that the commissioned notary have an additional closers license in order to notarize anything mortgage related. Minnesota is one of those states. I am a commissioned notary through the Minnesota Secretary of State with a five year term, and I am also a Minnesota Real Estate Closer licensed through the Minnesota Department of Commerce with a two year term.

I have heard talk that other states could possibly be jumping on this bandwagon and requiring notary signing agents to obtain this license in addition to their commission.
