Linda, what I explained to Julie is we often include a Fedex label with our service. We typically charge the client $90-$115 for a seller signing and anymore than that is for us providing a Fedex label. At the beginning of this year we also started paying $85 base for a lot of our seller signings. More if facbacks were required. As a business we work in averages. If I charge the client $135, I cover the cost of a Fedex label at $25, and then I have to pay a notary $150 due to distance then that is exactly what I have to do. I don’t get paid based on what I pay the notary, I get paid based on the agreed guaranteed fee to title. I might lose $25 on one and make $45 on another.
However, A notary should NEVER accept an assignment for a fee they are not happy with. Period. It doesn’t matter what the assignment goes out at. Both the notary and the service are both a business and each have their own expenses they must cover. The notary should base their fees on their cost of doing business and not what the service is charging. If a notaty based their fee off what the service is charging then does that mean a notary should accept a seller signing at $35 if the service is only charging $50? HECK NO!
If notaries will just stick to their own pricing guidelines and demand that with any title company or signing service they work with, then this wouldn’t be an issue. |
