This certainly wouldn't take the place of SC, but I think it's a big overstatement to say that it "serves no purpose" or is of "no use". In this environment, there's lots of reason to pursue whatever level of checking a notary has time for or wishes to do. And who knows what one might find. Certainly no one expects us to be able to do all this checking in the moment while deciding whether or not to take an assignment. But that doesn't mean that we can't do a thorough checking of a potentially new company as soon as time allows.
If we find negatives, we have a choice. If what we find is bad enough, we can always turn it back. (And as I've always said, I recommend doing so as quickly as possible, if that's to be considered.) If the comments are marginal, at least we know to be on alert and to stay on top of any collection issues - and not accept any more work from them until we have some experience - including pay history - of our own. |
