I would be happy to stop with the "shaming" verbiage. That is, in fact, the first time I've ever used that word in a context like this. I just don't think it's productive to call out individuals for taking fees that aren't ideal when those fees are the norm.
Like I mentioned, there are plenty of refis with scanbacks that are being taken for 45 dollars. It frustrates me to no end, because I could also say that those people are driving down the fees in this area. Likewise, I can also assume that they are desperate for income, even if the profit margin is razor thin. But that's why we, as an industry, should be organized and absorbing new notaries as a rule. Other industries do it, and they enjoy the benefits.
I would like to work together to find a more sustainable solution, though. And I'm willing to bet that the "shaming" wasn't intentional on your part, even if I feel shamed for being forced to accept lower fees by the conditions of the market.
I would also add that I'm reasonably proud of myself for getting an average of 1.5 signings per day since starting a few months ago, and that my fee average is steadily increasing. It's all I can do to work within the environment and try to carve out a niche for myself as a more competent NSA, and work towards getting the fees that I know I should be getting. I would rather it not be a niche, and instead be a standard, though.
I would also like to see notaries (myself included) be more proactive in defending our industry. I think you and I stand on the same side in this regard, but approach it from fundamentally different perspectives. |
