Re: natural

Ah, great subject.

I wore acrylics for a good 20 years until last Oct, I decided I was done. I was going every two weeks, paying $35 each visit and they just weren't lasting. Always breaking, always flying off. I told my manicurist I thought maybe the products used had become inferior.

I even tried the gels. Even worse.

So I decided to go ah naturel!. It's been a struggle, especially since our work requires our fingers to be right out there for all to see.

I tried different kinds of Sally Hansen hardener. DOESN'T WORK, waste of money.

I started researching online and here's what I found out: eat plenty of protein as that is what your fingernails and toenails are made of (keratin). I like meat every once in a while, but I'm a chicken and fish eater, so that's been difficult.

Drink plenty of water for the hydration but not good if hands are constantly in water. Makes the nails brittle and split.

Take biotin to promote growth (5,000 mg) and use olive oil for a moisturizer.

So I'm still waiting for the biotin to really kick in. I've always had great hair (not bragging) just a fact, my toenails are strong, but fingernails were always a challenge and all the women in my family have great natural fingernails except me.

I'm not giving up as I'm tired of the commitment of every two weeks and I just don't want to do that anymore. More important things in life to do and spend my money on. I still do have my eyebrows done every two weeks. Only takes 10 mins or so, so I don't mind that.

I think as we grow older this stuff just becomes so unimportant. I'm just waiting for the time I will let my hair go grey. Don't see it in the near future, but I'm sure it will happen. I have a great colorist that I've used since 2006. Red hair is a challenge for most hair dressers but there was just something about this guy, I had to try him out. I was so impressed and to this day, at my age, I still receive lots of compliments. How I met him: I did his refi.
