Yesterday I learned that the Nassau County DA is investigating Santos. Today came news that the DOJ is looking at him also, because of his finances. The issue here: where did the $700K he loaned to his own campaign come from? There are many theories about this, but nothing concrete so far. It looks suspiciously like an illegal campaign contribution, but who knows?
The latest today was a confusing claim he made that 9/11 took his mother's life, only to say months later that his mother died in 2016. His staff attempted to spin it by saying that his mother was in her office in the WTC on 9/11, but she survived only to succumb to cancer "a few years later". First of all, 15 years is not "a few years later". Secondly, there's no record of his mother ever working at the WTC. The only employment record for her that's been found has her working at a flower business around that time. His mother did die of cancer, but there's no evidence that it was in any way related to 9/11.
Santos has also claimed that his grandparents were Ukrainian Jews who fled to Brazil and changed their name from Zabrovsky. He has used that name in the past, identifying himself as Anthony Zabrovsky when he started a GoFundMe to support a pet charity that didn;t exist (according to the IRS).

As for his claims that his maternal grandparents escaped to Brazil from Belgium and Ukraine, genealogical records show that they both were born in Brazil, as were his both of his parents.

He claims to have been born in the US and have dual citizenship, but as far as I know, no one has looked into that yet.
This is the price we are paying for the political culture we've embraced over the past few years, where lies are brushed off as unimportant. As the lies grow bigger and more frequent and no one does anything about them, the liars become emboldened. We end up with a George Santos, and election deniers like Kari Lake who refuse to accept the fact that they lost, and what happened on January 6, 2021. People like this have taken gaslighting to a whole new level - not only will they tell you not to believe your own ears and eyes, but they will attempt to corrupt our system of government in order to attain and retain power.
Santos has no business being in Congress. Hershel Walker and Dr Oz are looking at him and saying, "OH! So THAT'S how you do it!" Just make it all up, be confident, and assume the electorate are too stupid to figure it out. And he almost got away with it.
I hope something can be done to deny him the seat, but I'm not confident that will happen. |
