I used to live in that district, and you're right - it is very conservative, but the incumbent was a Democrat. Santos ran the seat in 2020 but lost. He ten reinvented himself and rtan again in 2022 with the blessings of the Nassau County GOP, which did little to no vetting of him. The GOP leader in that county is now upset, but not upset enough to call for his expulsion, because - power. Can't afford to lose that seat, even if the guy who won it is a slug.
Just to put a bow on it, during their debates Santos accused his opponent of being a liar and a hypocrite..Talk about projection...
His opponent is now calling for a mulligan - nullify the election and run it again. That's not gonna happen, because there's no legal way to do that. For better or worse, this sleazeball won the election, and even if he's convicted on felony charges and jailed, the only way to unseat him is for the House to expel him, which requires a 2/3 vote - virtually impossible in a Republican controlled House. |
