From the California Notary Newsletter 2020, page 7:
"How to Avoid Common Mistakes 1. Require the physical presence of all persons for whom you perform notarial acts. The person who has signed a document must be physically with you at the time you complete a jurat or certificate of acknowledgment."

From Newsletter 2018:
"Correcting a Notarial Act There are no provisions in the law that allow for the correction of a completed notarial act. If you discover an error in a notarial act after completing the act, then the signature on the document must be notarized again and a new journal entry must be made."

IMO, it is our duty to know our rules/regulations/laws. I would suggest every (California) notary refresh memory cells and make it a habit to read through the handbook and newsletter at least once a year - preferably sometime at the beginning of the year when the new publications have come out. Remember, ignorance is NOT an excuse. Again, jmo.
