I've been in this business for over 15.5 years. To my recollection, I've never had any company be abrasive with me when I quote my fee.
When a scheduler calls, I ask all pertinent questions and based on those answers, I give them my fee quote. Sometimes, they say they have to get it approved. I usually don't count on those calling back with acceptance of fee (once in a great while, they surprise me and accept). If it's a title/escrow company, I'll ask what fee they're prepared to pay. No sense leaving money on the table.
I'm the one providing the service. I set my fees. If they offer something close to what I'm asking, I may be willing to negotiate provided I can still make a profit. Otherwise, we politely adjourn the conversation 'til next time. As OP intimated, this is a business. I try to run mine as such.
