Nothing in CA notary law addresses making corrections to a notary certificate. In 2020, the SOS at the time added a paragraph about that in a newsletter, stating the fact that our laws don't have any provisions for making corrections to notary certificates for a COMPLETED notarial act. I assume that means once it's been sent off or given to a client.

While completing a notarization, if presented with a notary certificate that doesn't meet our state's requirements, the CA notary has the option to either correct it or replace it. Which one to do is a judgment call, based on how much is inaccurate. If it's just lining out a capacity or correcting a venue, or eliminating the name of someone not appearing before me in a split signing, I'd probably just do the correction. If the infamous 'box' is missing, and I can fit in my little stamp above the venue, then I'd do that, too. If it's substantially more, especially for recordable docs, I'd just replace it.
