So you somehow managed to get to this appointment within 2 hours of receiving the documents - including to a changed address - and yet they want to short you more than half of your fee?!! I don't know about you, but I've never been able to bend the laws of physics and can only do what is physically possible. I suggest you firmly push back on that. Contact the title company, if possible. That's just crazy.

I'm very sorry this happened to you, but thank you for posting about this to warn others. It would be great if you could also add them to Signing Central. (I didn't see them there yet.)

I don't know where in CA you are, but unless you're in a very small, rural community, $65 is way too little, even for 22 pages, and especially if they want a scan back and same day drop. The companies that are only offering those very low fees are the very same ones who will try to take advantage of their notaries, however possible.

Here's my advice, for whatever it's worth:

* Don't accept fees that low in the first place.
* Carefully screen the companies you work for as soon as possible. If you see bad news, give it back right away. (Hopefully other notaries will be warned about these guys thanks to you.)
* A change in signing location (if significantly different than the one agreed upon) is grounds for re-negotiating a fee. (If you were making $150 for that signing, you probably wouldn't care, though, right?)
* When expected to scan back AND make same day drop, but you're not given enough time to do both, contact your client and let them know. When I run into that, I advise my clients that they can have one or the other, but both will probably not be possible. It's amazing how often that scan back isn't really needed. Once in a while, they say the drop can wait until the next day.

Hope this helps a little...
