Talk about spin - he is most definitely demanding that businesses do what he wants, and there was no suggestion implied or intended. He doubled down on it today by insisting he DOES have the right to issue such an order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a 1971 law used against rogue regimes, terrorists, and drug traffickers. It was not intended to be used as a weapon in a trade war, and there are constitutional issues with attempting to use the law for this reason.
Invoking the law also involves declaring a national emergency, and this would be the second time Trump attempts to declare a national emergency over a situation he himself created in order to go around the separation of powers. Like most of his other power grabs, I seriously doubt it would stand up in court because it's not a national emergency.
"Controlling production is telling a company how much they can produce and how and when to produce it."
It's also telling them where they can produce it and how they can produce it.
Disrupting the supply chain and demanding that it be replaced is a means of controlling production - and this would be a MASSIVE disruption of the supply chain. |
