Nowhere did I say anything about eliminating all guns. Had I used the more common name for it - "assault weapon" or assault-style weapon" - someone would jump all over me and say that it's a "sporting gun" and not an assault weapon. So, to be clear, I'm talking about the AR-15 and other semiautomatic rifles that are functionally equivalent to it.
The Washington Post just published a very graphic depiction of what a bullet from an AR-15 will do to a human body, based on 100s of autopsy reports and specifically the reports of two child victims - one from Sandy Hook, one from Marjorie Stoneham Douglas HS. I won't post the link to it because of the graphic nature, but if you Google "The Blast Effect", it should be the first result you see. I challenge any of the gunlovers who say they NEED an AR-15, even if they can't verbalize why, to view the graphical depiction of the havoc even a single bullet from that kind of weapon can cause, and then come back here and explain why they still NEED to have one.
As for mental health, if that's the issue, why hasn't anything been done about it? Why did 205 Republicans vote AGAINST increased mental health services in schools? We know that the shooter in this case was under treatment, but TN does not have a red flag law that would have kept the shooter away from the guns. Her parents tried - they knew she had a gun, and managed to get it away from her, but didn't know about the other seven guns she had, which were all purchased legally. Had there been a red flag law in place, those purchases could not have been made. So here we have two examples of things that could have quickly and easily been done to mitigate the danger - but politicians won't allow either because they might upset the NRA and the gunlovers.
So if your husband wants to use a 9mil pistol, I have no problem with it. The problem I have is with those who feel a need to possess a gun that was designed specifically to kill a lot people quickly and has no other use. The argument about using a machete or a knife if a gun is not available is bogus - no one is killing that many helpless people that quickly with a machete.
