Out of a mixture of curiosity and boredom, I decided to try something called Better Burger - a plant-based product that claims to be better than beef.
I cooked it the way I cook all of meats I cook - sous vide. I usually cook my burgers to medium-well, about 137 degrees. Better Burger suggested a much higher temp, so I cooked it to 150, which with real beef would be closer to well-done. I seasoned it the same way I would any other burger.
I was not overly impressed with the result. There's no way on Earth that you could confuse this thing with real meat. The mouthfeel was very close to what I would expect with a burger, so I give them points for that, but the taste was... meh.
I have one more left in the freezer that I may try to cook closer to medium-well, just to make sure I didn't hammer it like you would if you cook a real burger to that temp, but I'm underwhelmed by the taste experience. How can people say that they can't tell the difference between these things and real meat?
Has anyone else tried this or something similar? If so, what were your thoughts?
