Seems to me there's a lot of room between <<Witness Only>> person, <<only authorized to verify the identities and signatures of individuals>> and what a settlement agent does in some states. Sounds like the person who sent that response either doesn't get that or doesn't care.
I know some of you in other states do act as a "closer", collecting and even disbursing funds, on some level, even if it's just handing out checks. We don't get involved in any of that here, and that's one of the reasons I avoid using the term "closer" to describe what I do.
Sadly, I believe part of the problem is the proliferation of people getting into this field who don't make the effort to know what they're doing. Training programs offered by various organizations (not just XYZ) can barely scratch the surface in a one-day class. I also have to believe that some portion of this move is also a repercussion from the grinding down of fees.
On a different note, I had another signer (GNW) ask me about the webcam notarization process this morning. (He said he read about it somewhere.) Fortunately, he was skeptical about it, even bringing up the issue of personal appearance. He's a middle aged guy, though, and, as I've said before, I suspect millennials and younger are growing up with a different attitude about using technology for everything - including notarizations. Only time will tell.
