""His [Director Rob Melrose's] Caesar (the suavely confident Bjorn DuPaty) is a tall, charismatic African-American politician; he doesn’t look or sound much like Obama (he more closely recalls Michael Jordan), but the audience is unquestionably going to read him as an Obama stand-in nonetheless ..."
The actor who supposedly plays Trump in the current production does not look like an obese 71-year old man, so what's your point? Even though he doesn't really look like Trump except for the hair, the audience is going to see him as a Trump stand-in. And those who don't understand the play are going to be upset because the right-wing is telling them to be upset.
"That said, this year's play that everyone seems to be going crazy over is not one that I would choose to see (primarily because I prefer the original settings of old plays), however, it is art and is also protected speech."
It's hard to keep a 400-year old play relevant to a population that has the attention span of a two-year-old puppy... But as you say, it is art and protected speech. I think the reaction of the far right - demonstrated by Posobiec - is way out of line. The right complains that the left is too "politically correct", yet when the positions are suddenly reversed the right wing wants to censor what the left has to say. You can't have it both ways. |
