Are you volunteering to be record keeper? I think for this group something not as formal as what was described in the article might work better, especially because we're scattered all over. But either way, we'd need more participants. After the holidays, I suspect interest might increase...
Also, the program I use is designed for long-term maintenance, rather than quick loss of lots of weight, which has a tendency to come right back - with a vengeance. That happens because people lose too much muscle vs. fat on most diets, which lowers their metabolism, i.e. the baseline for calorie intake that won't add weight. So this one involves 4 weeks of weight loss, followed by 2 weeks of stabilizing, with a gradual increase of food. There's also a maintenance program (which I should be following more closely - but getting in my daily 'steps' is a major ingredient that I've been slacking on.)
This approach doesn't necessarily lend itself to a competition (unless everyone is using the same program), but may be much healthier over the long haul. (If anyone wants more info, PM me.)
