There is some really good info on the Internet. Although Dementia and Alzheimer’s aren’t the only memory/mental issues with the elderly, they are the most prevalent. Searching for Dementia and Alzheimer’s bring up all the symptoms.

Another reason I try to talk to the elder person one-on-one is not only to make sure they understand why I am there, know what they are signing and why, know all the parties involved, make sure they are signing willingly. Many times, family members are in denial and choose not to admit or flat out deny family member is ill. This is where coercion could be a possibility.

If I suspect any Dementia or Alzheimer’s at all, no matter the stage, I will not do the signing. No legal doc of any kind should be signed by Dementia or Alzheimer’s patients. You mention differences during the day or different days. Alzheimer’s patients can show signs of sundowners and showtimers. Sundowners is basically what the name sounds like — late in the afternoon with shadows from the sun changing position in the sky and eventually setting, the shadows scare them and personality changes. Showtimers is a symptom that doctors have no explanation for. For a few seconds to longer periods of time, they can be perfectly normal and have full memory and can carry on perfect conversations. There is an older gentleman at Memory care center that I bring out some memory of someone in his life. He comes behind me, hugs me and kisses me on the head. When I leave, I go to hug him and he has no recollection of me.
