Due Diligence

Do your due diligence and research PRIOR to doing the job.

Just because someone contacts you for a signing and gives you their company name, that doesn't make them authentic or ethical. Do a Google search for reviews. Go to the various notary forums and seek information there on that company. If you've already accepted the job and find they have a less than stellar reputation, give it back immediately and tell them why. If they have a slow pay/no pay reputation, don't let them talk you back in by saying those reviews were by disgruntled NSAs or erroneous reviews in some way. Others have gone before you and taken the time to post their negative experience. Take them at their word or you'll eventually just be another notch in that bad actor's belt.

You're correct. We shouldn't have to chase our fees. A reputable, ethical company doesn't require reminders or collection letters.
