The industry sure has changed...... From when I did my first signings in 1993 for an average of $75 for overnight docs to what they what they want to pay now. Our costs have gone up considerably, in 1993 I could accept those $75.00 signings as my costs were not as high as they are today. Gas alone was at least half as what it is today, my notary commission was not the hassle to obtain as it is today. People were lured to this business with the hopes of making $100,000 per year. I know there is at least one SA on this board that claims they make that much on signings, personally, I find that hard to believe.
This has become a part time business or rather avocation. I find it utterly mind boggling that people will drive 100 miles for a $65.00 signing! People get their commission, notary stamp and throw common sense out the window because they are now "public officers'" Whee! In the good old Army days our response would be, "That and a dime will buy you a cup of coffee back in the states." But now that cup of coffee will cost you $1.50
But as you say, we are in the drivers seat. All you have to do is say no to the ridiculous fees. Know what your true costs are, and put value on your time and efforts and stick by it. |
