I know what I saw, and it did not include smiles and laughter. The only smile from Pelosi was when the cop said "Hi", and that smile looked more like a reflex. I'm not sure how much a struggle you expect an 82-year old man to have with a guy half his age, but he was definitely trying to get the hammer away. On the 911 call, he clearly had the guy standing close3 to him (you can hear him talking) and was trying not to get him more riled up. I doubt that calling him "gentleman" was anything more than trying to defuse the situation - you're making it sound like they were old friends.
As to why the cops didn't take him out immediately - they were standing outside the door and reacted immediately when he swung the hammer. What more do you expect them to do? Shoot immediately and then sort it out later?
