Re: What it means to be "woke"

DeSantis is never going to be POTUS, so no worries there.

So for you, "woke" means riots, looting, and crime? Funny, that's not what DeSantis has been saying when he talks about it in regards to corporations and education and any other idea he doesn't like. What does the Stop Woke Act have to do with riots and looting and crime? He and other Republicans use the term "woke" as a bogeyman, trying to instill fear. It's replaced "commies" and "Marxists" and "socialist" and "CRT" to label all the bad things that threaten what they see as the proper way of American life.

So in the interest of defeating "wokeness", we have books being banned in schools, actual historical facts being erased or whitewashed, educators being restricted in what they can say, librarians threatened with felony charges, an assault on first amendment rights - and all for what? So everyone in the state of Florida will do whatever DeSantis wants them to do? This has never been about children being made to feel ashamed - it's always been about thought control. The biggest danger in reading books is not that they might indoctrinate you, but that they may make you think. DeSantis and his ilk don't want you to think - they want you to follow them blindly. The only reason DeSantis can get away with the stunts he has been pulling is because he has a veto-proof majority in both houses of the legislature, so he can pretty much do whatever he wants. That won't fly in the real world beyond Florida's borders. We have something similar here in Texas, where the GOP controls the state legislature - Greg Abbott gets what he wants, no matter how despicable it is. But he's not ever going to be POTUS either.

Finally, since you claim to know what "woke" is, tell me what the opposite of it is - if you're not "woke", what are you?
