Totally agree with you. I grew up in the Northwoods of WI back in the 70's when deer hunting was the norm for anyone old enough to carry a rifle. Kids as young as 8 years old were out with their dads. Back then the bars opened up at 6:00 AM during that time of year and hunters were packed getting a few in before heading on out. Even with the boozed-up hunters and elementary school kids we didn't have a problem. Accidents on occasion yes, but usually from those falling from their tree stand, shooting themselves in the foot type of thing, not shooting at each other intentionally. That was a different generation. Back in the 70's, the worst thing that happened was the occasional bomb threat called in from a student who didn't want to take a test. That usually made everyone go to the football field for about an hour or so until it was all cleared, and nothing was ever found. Back then, nobody locked their doors and nobody really had to use them to shoot an intruder. There were none, at least where I grew up. That was a different generation. Now when we think of guns, our minds go to the worst place. That is what we have become and have to live with. People have a real fear of them and what they can do. It's a lack of understanding and education and respect. Now we think of them first and foremost as a weapon of destruction, not for hunting, not for respect, but just the worst-case scenario.
I don't know the answer to this problem, maybe AI will come up with a solution in a few years as a lot smarter than all of us. I don't think there is going back or an end to the problem without a rewrite of the Constitution to bring it to today's standards and evolutions. I can't see that happening yet for decades, unfortunately. Meanwhile, the population desensitizes and another day at the office. jmo |
