Tips are no longer used to satisfy wages nor required to be split in CA. But I think it's still very common to share with other staff. Starting next month minimum wage in CA goes up to $14/hr and in 2023 to $15. Depending on the area starting wages are higher. Our local McD's and other drive-throughs start at $18. Many basic jobs will start at $20. So tipping for services is always an extra on top of wages. Still, some people depend on them.
Regardless of the situation I never viewed I was paying part of their wage. Everyone will have a different take on tipping, who, why and how much. I view it as an expression of appreciation. As a result I end up tipping the most unusual people who perform a great service or a favor. Many people go out of their way providing good customer service and I enjoy rewarding that. It also makes repeat patronage a better experience.
In short, that was a huge tip. But the customer has the right to decide how much and to make the call on tipping a specific individual, apart if necessary, from a shared pool. |
