I don't believe this group has any direct legal authority over notary law in any state, but they do appear to have a GREAT DEAL of influence on law makers. The latter typically aren't experts and depend on lobbyists to 'learn' the supposed facts on an issue. And how unbiased an opinion do you think they get?
I still have much to learn about how this would work, but if it catches on in a big way, I imagine we're going to see notarizations happening more and more by big players in central locations rather than by a multitude of notaries like us all over the place, as happens now. Seems to me that a notary would have to have a pretty substantial investment in equipment and software to handle remote notarizations - well beyond what we currently need to do loan signings. It would be a lot more economical to have heavy duty equipment centrally located, and with the need for personal appearance gone, big notary companies could be located anywhere. I'm picturing boiler room type operations, with lots of notary employees, and most likely in states with laws that are friendliest to their type of service.
