At the very least, even if it was a telemarketer, he could have put out the word that he was lost. Since he wasn't aware there was a search party looking for him perhaps he didn't feel like he was lost?
So many hikers die needlessly. If they had a way to communicate such as a satellite phone they might still be alive. I think of the husband, wife and baby, even their dog who died on a trail in CA last week. Dehydration and hypothermia. Clearly, they didn't expect to get lost. We also don't expect to get into a car accident but carry insurance.
A few years back a man my wife works with was climbing a trail in Yosemite by himself and broke his foot. No one around. He had to crawl on his hands and knees back to the trail head.
Satellite radios are expensive but I just found out you can rent them for as low as $8/day. |
