You don’t ski by yourself, you don’t rock climb by yourself and you definitely don’t hike by yourself in the mountains. People need to be aware of where you are. There are forest service boxes where you leave your information of where you are headed; you leave a note on your windshield as when you left your car, where you are going, if you are planning on camping out and when you are expecting to return to your car. The maddest and most upset my hubby was with me was when we were first building the cabin. It was 3 in the afternoon and a group of property owners were hiking 3 miles to a lake above us. Hubby was helping other neighbors. He had been telling me I needed to join in with other people and not be a recluse. I left him a note where we went. The 3 miles was the way the Eagle flies — very rocky and steep. Even though summer, it began getting cold and dark. I knew enough to stay next to the creek coming down, because it’s the same creek that goes thru our property. Another guy and I were coming down alone — have no idea where rest of group were. About 9:00 pm I can hear hubby on 4-wheeler making his way up the mountain. This guy and I were all but down with about 1/4 mile left. It took hubby over an hour to find rest of group. It has been almost 40 years, and I can honestly say I’ve never made the trek up to that lake again — day or night. |
