I cover this in a different way, since I have different laws in my state. My state law is very hazy about what I may charge; the only number mentioned in the law is 50¢ for a certificate under seal. Since 50¢ is too little to be bothered with for social security tax purposes, all my notarizations are free and I only charge for driving, printing, faxing, and quality-control.
This policy will be even more helpful beginning Sunday, when my term of office as a Justice of the Peace begins. My notary guide says ex-officio notaries (including JPs) can't charge notarization fees. I've read the law, and I think this part of the guide is wrong, but since I don't charge anyway, I won't have to argue with anyone about how I understand the law. |
