Are you attending a deposition, pretrial conference, or a trial? Was this your first notice of this claim?
You should (or should have contacted) contact your E&O Carrier upon receiving the court notice, as your policy requires. I hope you did so before appearing by yourself. Failure to notify your carrier promptly can result in denial of coverage for the claim. It does not matter that you "did nothing wrong." Your E&O carrier would have retained experienced counsel to review the claim and to advise & to represent you.
I sense that the claim was based upon undue influence or grandma's diminished capacity, which may involve facts and circumstances more involved than just notarizing a deed and other paperwork.
Cosidering the value of CA real estate, it is wise for CA notaries, and those in other expensive areas, to carry high E&O limits.
