At best, I believe, the bill Matt last posted about here may have passed out of Committee (possibly one house of our Legislature), but it has never become law. (Just going from memory, but if it had been signed into law, we'd know about it.) I expect RON will be approved via federal law before anything substantial gets approved here, but time will tell.
Whether or not RON has anything to do with the increase in fraud (specifically with the segment that has to do with fraudulent Deeds) I believe is yet to be determined. That it might, was the first thing that popped into my head, although I admit it's pure speculation. However, concluding that it has nothing to do with the increase in fraud just because it wasn't mentioned in the article isn't a fair assumption either, (although it may be the case).
Naturally, few - if any - of us have any insight into what proportion of closings are already being handled via RON, but I find myself wondering how it might impact those numbers in the future. I suppose it's possible, for all we know, that it may reduce that type of fraud - depending on how effective the process for identifying signers turns out to be. IMO, we just don't know yet.
