Going in order, the objective ID check helps to verify that the ID was actually issued by the relevant agency and is not a forgery. But it's still up to the notary to make a subjective evaluation of whether the person on the video screen looks like the person pictured in the license. (Maybe digital face recognition will be added in the future, but that isn't required yet, and could have problems of its own.)
Not everything is recorded, the signer's answers to knowledge-based questions are not recorded, just whether the quiz was passed or failed.
The location of the signer and the notary is recorded, to the extent the technology can figure out. Especially when using a laptop or desktop, there is a substantial chance the technology-indicated location will be hundreds of miles from the actual location.
Will the average rate of fraudulent notarizations be more for RON, compared to traditional notarizations? Or the other way around? We'll see. |
